WHOSE RAILWAY IS IT ANYWAY?
With new high-speed lines planned for every continent, the world is experiencing a railway renaissance. But once again, railways are being built to serve the capitalist and imperialist interests which fuelled their development in the nineteenth century. High rail fares keep passengers on the roads and in the skies, and the pursuit of profit is threatening jobs, pay and conditions for railway workers. Amid a climate emergency and persistent global inequalities, how can we instead build railways to serve the people? Join us to launch the September-October issue of New Internationalist, which takes us on a railway adventure through nineteenth century hypercapitalism, cross-continental industrial unrest, imperialism and anti-imperialism in Tanzania and Moldova's entry to the 2022 Eurovision song contest. The magazine's editor Conrad Landin will be joined by special guests to discuss the state of our railways, and how we can fight back.
Conrad Landin is a Mount Florida-based journalist and co-editor of New Internationalist. He started writing about the railways as industrial correspondent for the Morning Star, covering numerous trade disputes including the 2016-17 Southern rail strikes. He writes regularly for RAIL magazine, RailReview, ASLEF's Locomotive Journal and RMT News on the politics and history of the railways, and recently reported on the RMT strikes for the London Review of Books. His news reports, features and book reviews have also appeared in Tribune, The Guardian and the Times Literary Supplement.
As always tickets are free but must be booked in advance. Copies of the new issue will be available on the night
