I've been threatening the Book Group here with this for sometime now.

This is not Agatha Christie in translation.

It certainly has not been made into a film with Amy McAdams and Ryan Gosling.

It's the OG, accept-no-substitutes, reason to be a bookseller, 'no notes' Trilogy by Ágota Kristóf.

Sent to a remote village for the duration of the war, two children devise physical and mental exercises to render themselves invulnerable to pain and sentiment. The Notebook distils the experience of Nazi occupation and Soviet ‘liberation’ during World War II into a stark fable of timeless relevance.

Written in Kristof’s spare, direct style, the novels are an exploration of both the after-effects of trauma and the nature of storytelling.

Please note that the book comes as a complete trilogy but we will be pausing in between books and resuming in April and then June. I highly recommend readers rest in between titles.
