Join us for the launch of Maria Sledmere’s Cinders (KRUPSKAYA Books, 2024) – a perverse and hybrid reimagining of Jacques Derrida’s 1987 book of the same name and the rags-to-riches fairy tale, Cinderella, set against anthropocene mythoscapes of deep time, haunted leisure plazas and terraformed Mars.

Cinders retells an old tale about lateness–how late is it, is it too late, what are the stakes of being too late if it is too late. This lateness, in Sledmere’s visionary lyric poems, pervades the structures and strictures of the pop dystopias and erotic utopias she studies: gender, class, geography, space–inner and outer. The very elements of Cinderella that were there all along as the wood burned to ash in the hearth. There will also be readings by Megan Ridgway and Lucille Mona Ling.

Megan Ridgway is a poet and writer based in Glasgow. She has been previously published in Alchemy Lit, CHapter House, THe Alasdair Gray Archive and The Storyteller’s Refrain.

Lucille Mona Ling is a poet from Berlin, currently based in Glasgow. She was part of St. Mungo Mirrorball’s Verse Apprenticeship Scheme Clydebuilt 14 (2021-2022), mentored by J.L. Williams. Her poem Historic Recurrence has been included in the Scottish Poetry Library's Anthology of Best Scottish Poems of 2021. Recent publications include poems in Gutter, Propel Magazine and Horizon Magazine. She is the co-founder and poetry editor at Contralytic: an interdisciplinary philosophy journal.

Maria Sledmere was raised in South Ayrshire and now lives in Glasgow. In 2022 she completed a DFA in Creative Writing at the University of Glasgow, working on a project of ‘hypercritique’ which responds to the anthropocene through entanglements of poetry, essay and journaling. Maria lectures in English & Creative Writing at the University of Strathclyde, is managing editor of SPAM Press and teaches writing workshops for Beyond Form and the87press. She was recently included in the Saltire Society’s ‘40 under 40’ list celebrating ‘outstanding Scottish creatives’.

As always tickets are free and you can pre-order a copy of Cinders here.
